Ecotourism Study Timely

A significant share of the existing Mackay accommodation sector has the potential to reposition its product to attract the ecotourism market, that is according to Kim Logan, a graduating tourism student from CQU Mackay.
Kim’s study initially involved establishing the aspects required to become an ecotourism accommodation product and then assessing the existing stock. Over 20 properties were seen to have the potential for development.
It was recognised that while some properties in the area were already being pitched at this market segment, only Broken River Mountain Retreat and Club Med Lindeman Island held accreditation from the Ecotourism Association of Australia. Tourism lecturer at CQU Mackay Bruce Milles, advised that accreditation by the association was important as it guaranteed the initial benchmarks required and promoted ongoing maintenance of high quality standards, a particular requirement of this very discerning market segment. Miss Logan commented that, “If as few as five establishments developed their potential, it would create a solid base for the further growth of this valuable niche market”. The study is timely in that 2002 has been designated as the International Year for Ecotourism by the United Nations. Numerous activities are planned across Australia throughout the year and those interested could find out more at www.ecotourism-australia.info, a website specifically managed by the Ecotourism Association of Australia for promotion and coordination of the years activities.
At the local level, Allan Young, General Manager Economic Development with Mackay Tourism and Development Bureau is working with interested members to further develop some activities to raise awareness of ecotourism in the locality. Anyone interested in contributing to the further development of these activities can contact Allan on 49513754.
