Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Emerald celebrates STEPS completion and anniversary 

CQU Emerald Campus had a double celebration on Friday October 13. STEPS (Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Skills) celebrated the 2006 students completing their course as well as the 20th anniversary of the STEPS program.

During the evening, 2006 students were presented with their completion certificates by Vice-Chancellor Professor John Rickard.

PhotoID:3542 Other distinguished guests included Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Academic Services, Professor Alex Radloff; Director of the Division of Teaching and Learning Services, Dr Jeanne McConachie and Karen Seary, the Head of Academic Learning Support.

On behalf of the 2006 students, Melinda Fowler spoke of her STEPS journey and what the course had meant to her and the rest of the students.

Entertainment for the evening was presented by the Emerald State High School Swing Doctors and the Central Highlands Singers. Past STEPS students were presented with a certificate and a small gift as a memento of the evening to celebrate 20 years of the STEPS program. A commemorative STEPS book and commemorative wines were on sale during the evening.

Mary Pearce, a 2005 graduate, gave a memorable reflection speech in verse which had everyone remembering and laughing.

The celebrations commenced at 6pm in the beautiful gardens of the Australian Agricultural College (where CQU Emerald is based), with over 100 guests in attendance.

After the formalities, everyone joined for a barbecue dinner also prepared by the Australian Agricultural College.

PhotoID:3543 STEPS Coordinator for CQU Emerald, Jo Rosenblatt, said she was pleased with the evening and that a good time had been had by all.

The celebration was capped off with the cutting of a special 20th anniversary cake at the end of the evening.

Partying continued the next day at the CQU Corporate tent at the Emerald 100 Race Day.

STEPS is a bridging/preparatory course for people who are interested in preparing for university studies or in upgrading their computing, mathematics and language skills. Prerequisites are that you must be 18 years of age.
