Sterling Ironman effort by Human Movement students

The Seapspray Rydges Capricorn Half Ironman on Sunday August 14 proved to be a hugely successful weekend, not only for the athletes but for over 150 volunteers who worked tirelessly over the weekend and played a major part in ensuring the triathlon went off without a hitch.

PhotoID:2294 CQU's Human Movement Science students played a major role with volunteering over the weekend.

About 20 students, current and past, assisted with course construction, volunteer packs and athlete registrations on the Saturday. CQU students then filled almost half of the 140 volunteer places come race day.

The remaining volunteers included school students and other triathlon supporters.

After what was a chilly 4am start for some, the day turned into a perfect opportunity for being out in the sunshine.

CQU Health and Human Performance's Industry Liaison Officer, Alex Bright coordinated the volunteers for the weekend and was extremely happy with the results.

"I received great feedback from the X Tri staff (race organisers) and the competitors with one southerner even commenting that the volunteers at Rydges were the best she'd ever encountered in a race, they were very supportive," Ms Bright said.

The volunteers were recognised with a barbecue after the race to say thanks and were issued with t-shirts and volunteer packs on the day.

Meanwhile, CQU Human Movement academic and triathlete Associate Professor Peter Reaburn won the Queensland long-course championship after winning his 50-54 years division at the Rydges event.
