Rockhampton residents will have a chance to sample a little taste of Poland during this year’s CQ Multicultural Fair and University Open Day on Sunday, August 8.
Coming from the Sunshine Coast, the Polish Folk Music Group will entertain during the day’s festivities.
'Kapela' is a group of students and teachers from the School of Polish Language and Culture on the Sunshine Coast.
Dressed in hand-crafted traditional, colourful costumes from several regions of Poland and using some very original and unusual instruments, young musicians under the leadership of instructor Joanna Gsrka and well known violinist and instructor Adam Piechocinski, will present various Polish folk music items.
They will play popular Polish folk songs from the eighteenth and nineteenth century, followed by the Highlander’s Suite of several folk pieces.
The culmination of their show will be music from some Polish National Dances with the appearance of a legendary Polish character, the hobby-horse “Lajkonik” dressed in caricature costume, signifying the times of Turkish invasion of Poland and the saving of Cracow by its residents.
There will also be a Polish stall where visitors can try their luck in producing some traditional Polish paper cuts, examine Polish memorabilia or perhaps taste some famous delicious Polish sweets, including chocolate plums.
The School of Polish Language and Culture on the Sunshine Coast was established to enable local people with Polish heritage to learn the Polish language and promote their culture through art, music and dance.
