Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

US Consul General Niels Marquardt

Niels Marquardt assumed his position as US Consul General in Sydney on August 21, 2010.  He is a career member of the US Foreign Service, with the rank of Minister Counselor.  He previously served as the US Ambassador to Republic of Madagascar and to the Union of the Comoros from 2007 to 2010, US Ambassador to the Republic of Cameroon from 2004 to 2007, and as US Ambassador to the Republic of Equatorial Guinea from 2004 to 2006.

Consul General Marquardt's overseas assignments as an economic officer have taken him to Germany (1995-98), France (1990-94), Thailand twice (1981-83, 1987-90) and Brazzaville, Congo (1983-85). He also served in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs and the Bureau of Human Resources, and as a Country Risk Analyst at the Export-Import Bank.  He completed the State Department's "Senior Seminar" in 2001 and the Economic-Commercial Studies Program at the Foreign Service Institute in 1986. 

Prior to joining the Foreign Service in 1980, Mr Marquardt served from 1977 to 1979 as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Rwanda. He graduated from Lewis and Clark College in 1975, from the American Graduate School of International Management in 1980, and from the National War College in 1995. His foreign languages are French, German, Thai, and Spanish.  He has been married to Judi Marquardt since 1981.  They have two grown daughters, Kaia and Kelsey.  Two other daughters, Torrin and Yannika, attend the University of California-Berkeley and the University of Portland respectively.

  • The Consul General is the post's Principal Officer and coordinates all functions of the US Government in the Sydney consular district. The Consul General maintains contact with senior Australian officials, both state and federal, within the consular district and keeps the Embassy and Washington informed of important political, economic and other developments affecting US interests. The Consul General often represents the United States at public functions and addresses various groups and organizations on issues affecting Australian-American relations. Briefing visiting US officials and American business representatives is also an important responsibility.
