CQU receives $2.16M for expansion of services

Central Queensland University has received $2.16 million from the Department of Education, Science and Technology (DEST) Capital Development Pool for 2005, which will support the University’s drive to expand an infrastructure that serves more than 20,000 students and staff. It was the largest allocation of funds to a Queensland University.

Education Minister Brendan Nelson announced the figures earlier today. $760,000 is earmarked for a new science and research building at CQU Bundaberg. This, in addition to $1million from the CDP funding for 2004, will allow CQU Bundaberg to establish basic chemistry and biology laboratories (increasing the university’s ability to teach science related subjects) and dedicated and versatile research facilities, including a proposed multi-media research centre.

$1.4million will go towards information systems at CQU Rockhampton, CQU Mackay and CQU Bundaberg campuses. The facilities will support educational delivery across its multiple campuses and provide cost effective and flexible teaching and learning.

“We are very pleased with this response and the commitment Minister Nelson has made to the people of Central Queensland and the growth and strength of regional universities,” explained Vice Chancellor and President Glenice Hancock.

The funding will allow CQU Bundaberg to enter another phase of its development. “Our provision of research facilities is part of the maturation of a regional campus and will allow us to respond more effectively to the needs of our community,” said Alex Grady, head of Campus, CQU Bundaberg. The campus was established in 1994 at its current location. It’s presence in Bundaberg dates to 1988.

Regional universities were well represented in today’s CDP announcements. Other Queensland universities receiving funding from the CDP for 2005 were: QUT - Caboolture multi-partner campus $2million USQ and Wide Bay development - $1.75million Griffith - Logan Campus Extension - $2million JCU - ICT infrastructure - $1.5million UQ - Stage 3 Ipswich Campus - $1.5million University of Sunshine Coast - Stage V Main Campus - $2million The Capital Development Pool funding is always announced two years in advance.
