Conservatorium showcases talent on regional tour

North Queensland high school students had a unique opportunity recently to work with (and be mentored by) talented staff and students from the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM), as part of the CQCM Outreach Tour.
Coordinated by Mackay CQCM Lecturer Derrin Kerr, the tour was designed to expose young musicians in North Queensland to industry experts.
The tour provided a challenging instrumental and musical experience for those students who may be considering studying music at a tertiary level, with a view to a career path.
The tour group visited regional high schools in Bowen, Townsville and Atherton and concluded with a 3-day Jammin' program at the Bentley Park College in Cairns.
"The tour offered a stimulating and supportive experience for any young musician and was full of fun and inspiration," Derrin said.
"The response from schools to our tour was great. We were able to deliver demonstration performances and conduct instrumental and vocal workshops/classes, which complemented school music programs."
"It was important for us to take the time to meet with the students and discuss with them the opportunities available at a tertiary level for those wanting to make music a career."
Mackay high school students will have an opportunity to experience the talents of the CQCM at the upcoming Mackay Jammin' to be held on September 23-26.
