Award for train project shows Glen on track

Recent CQUniversity graduate Glen Bearham has been recognised for his final-year project thesis evaluating battery power boosted freight locomotives in pusher applications...

Mr Bearham recently attended a presentation ceremony, where he was announced as runner-up for the Railway Technical Society of Australasia (RTSA) Student Thesis Award.

He gained a cash prize and a year's free membership of the RTSA.

Supervised by Associate Professor Colin Cole, Mr Bearham's project was done at CQUniversity's Centre for Railway Engineering in Rockhampton, using longitudinal train simulation software.

The Railway Engineering Student Thesis Awards were presented at the AGM and Annual Members Dinner of the Queensland Chapter of the RTSA in Brisbane (July 23).

Mr Bearham is employed in Rockhampton as a mechanical engineer with Joy Mining Machinery and its associated longwall engineering group in Queensland.

"Not only is Joy the world's largest OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) supplier of underground mining equipment, they are also very good to work for," he said.

"At Rockhampton we have both manufacturing and rebuild operations.

"Because there are only 2 mechanical engineers in the Queensland longwall group, and longwall encompasses a large amount of Joy equipment, I get a broad range of engineering experience."

Mr Bearham said he hoped to work his way up to senior engineer level with Joy Mining.
