Janelle STEPS towards new career

Janelle Fry is a cleaner at two local schools in Mackay and has been thinking about a career change for sometime now. This week, she started the 12 week accelerated STEPS program at Central Queensland University (CQU) and is very excited to be have commenced her journey towards a new career.

PhotoID:3167 Her desire to help people had Janelle pondering a career as a Social Worker; she just had no clue how to go about getting into university since she hadn’t completed Year 12.

“I saw a poster about the STEPS program at CQU and I thought, terrific, that’s my way in!” said Janelle.

The Accelerated STEPS program varies slightly from the mainstream STEPS program in that it runs for 12 week, classes are intensive and fast paced, and requires a four day per week commitment from Mackay students.

Lyn Forbes-Smith, co-ordinator of the STEPS program is proud of the achievements of students who complete the course. ‘ STEPS is an excellent preparation for the demands of university study, and transforms the lives of students who go on to study their degree or secure employment in more rewarding and satisfying lines of work’.

Piloted in 1986, STEPS celebrates its 20th year this year in an extravaganza that will bring both current and past STEPS lecturers and students together at the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music on Saturday 14th October, 2006.
