Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

CQ kids get their hands on science 

Dozens of hands-on science, engineering and technology activities are on offer to Central Queensland school children next week (August 17-22) as part of National Science Week.

Government bodies, industries, schools, community organisations and Central Queensland University have combined their efforts to involve thousands of children across the region. Many of the activities are presented via a program called Your Future is SET XPO funded by the federal Department of Education, Science & Training.

Activities range from butterfly making for the younger children up to pulling apart computers and using video microscopes for the older students.

CQU Rockhampton has plenty of science, engineering and technology displays on offer during the CQ Multicultural Fair and University Open on Sunday (August 17) and in various parts of the campus on Thursday and Friday (August 21-22). In addition, CQU will conduct its annual Schools Science Quiz commencing 7pm on Wednesday August 20 in Building 5/G.02, with details from Dr John Parmenter on 4930 9622.

CQU Bundaberg is expecting 200 upper primary school children on Tuesday, August 19. to explore chemistry magic, flight analysis, body mechanics, circulation of organisms, plant health, robots, marine life and clean water. This even is in conjunction with a Brain Waves Festival. For details call 4150 7038.

CQU Gladstone is welcoming junior high school students on Thursday, August 21, with a range of activities including the chemistry of baking, aviation technology, robotics, water and sediment sampling, interactive multimedia, veterinary science and legal psychology. CQU Emerald is working alongside the Central Highlands Science Centre and other community, industry, education and government partners to present a whole week of activities including a schools open day at Emerald State School on Wednesday, August 20, and a science quiz night at the Town Hall on Thursday, August 21. CQU Mackay is welcoming secondary school students on Tuesday, August 19, with explorations of plastics and polymers, water quality, infection control, computer hardware and digital editing.
