University rewards Vince Lester for support

Former long-serving parliamentarian Vince Lester will be made a Companion of the University at a graduation ceremony in Brisbane.

Mr Lester will be presented with his award in front of 129 new CQU graduates from the CQU Brisbane and Gold Coast international campuses on Wednesday, May 18.

The Companion of the University award allows the University to publicly recognise the achievements of individuals in the community and/or the University.

PhotoID:1943 Vice-Chancellor Professor John Rickard said Mr Lester was chosen in recognition of his many years of distinguished service as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in Queensland and as a staunch supporter of the University.

Mr Lester retired last year after 29 years in Parliament. He was the longest serving Member in the 50th Parliament.

He was Minister for Police and Minister for Employment, Training and Industrial Affairs from September 1989 - December 1989; Minister for Employment, Training and Industrial Affairs from December 1987 - September 1989; Minister for Employment and Industrial Affairs from November 1983 - December 1987; and Minister for Employment and Labour Relations from August - November 1983.

Mr Lester was Member for Belyando (1974-1977), Member for Peak Downs (1977-1992) and Member for Keppel (1992-2004).

“As a strong advocate of Central Queensland University, Vince has promoted the University through the Parliament of Queensland and throughout the State. He has brought many members of State and Federal Parliament to the University to highlight the achievements and needs of the organisation. He has also used overseas trade missions to highlight the performance of the University, its role in the community and to promote Central Queensland University as a worthwhile destination for overseas students,” Professor Rickard said.

The graduation ceremony will take place at the Presidential Ballroom, Carlton Crest Hotel, King George Square, Brisbane, on Wednesday May 18, from 2pm. It will be officiated by Chancellor Rennie Fritschy and Vice-Chancellor Professor John Rickard.
