A number of CQUniversity staff participated in the Indigenous Studies Research Network (ISRN) Annual Symposium held at QUT recently. The Symposium focused on ‘What is Critical: Indigenous Studies in the 21st Century?'
The Symposium pushed the boundaries in discussing issues within disciplines, fields and universities. It highlighted the history and changing nature of Indigenous Studies and what in fact constitutes Critical Indigenous Studies in universities?
Speakers included Prof Roger Maaka (NZ), Prof Hokulani K. Aikau (USA), Prof Larissa Behrendt (AUS), A/Prof Maggie Walter (AUS), A/Prof Chris Anderson (CAN) and Prof Aileen Moreton-Robinson. Each speaker was allocated one hour for their presentation and questions.
Participants were challenged by all of the speakers. A number of ideas generated lots of questions and lively debate during the sessions and in the breaks.
CQUniversity attendees included Simon Burgess, Thomas Duggan and Lee Barnett (Nulloo Yumbah); Julie Doyle (CMS, Sydney); Carol McPherson (School of Nursing and Midwifery); and Anne Munns, Donna Smith and Bronwyn Fredericks (Office of Indigenous Engagement).
Professor Bronwyn Fredericks, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Engagement) and BMA Chair in Indigenous Engagement said "normally we would need to attend an international conference over a few days to have access to these prominent scholars. I am really glad that CQUniversity staff took up this opportunity to attend".
