Seven picked in Qld rugby league sides

Seven Central Queensland University students have been picked in Queensland University Rugby League sides after strong performances at the Northern University Championships held in Brisbane last week.

Thirteen CQU students took part in the championships with 12 players forming part of the combined North Central side that almost defeated the tournament favourites South East Queensland Open in the final.

Having earlier defeated the South East Queensland Colts 32-24, the team contested the final against last year’s winner.

The team lost 22-16 in the final but combined well and trailed by just two points with five minutes remaining in the game.

The four CQU players selected for the Queensland Open side were Guy Williams, Rowan Graham, Gerard Parle, and Ben Burke with Jo O’Callaghan, Glen Egan and Chris Fleming being selected in the under-19 Colts side.

Youngster Guy Williams impressed selectors with his form and was selected in the Open side despite being only 18 years old.

Australian 2002 University Representatives, Rowan Graham, and Ben Burke again played well to make the team.

The Queensland Colts and Open sides will play New South Wales in Interstate games to be held in Brisbane on May 24. From these matches Australian sides will be selected to play a two test series against Great Britain Lions sides that will tour Australia in July.

In the playoff for third the South East Queensland Colts defeated Southern Universities 40-4.
