A big Open Day at CQU Rockhampton

Thousands of prospective CQU students of all ages will find out that dreams can come true at CQU Rockhampton Open Day on Sunday August 14.

The University is offering – for the first time – more than 30 information and career seminars at Rockhampton (coinciding with the Central Queensland Multicultural Fair) for people who are seeking career advice and exploring study options, including on-campus and distance-education opportunities.

CQU Rockhampton Open Day also features scores of prizes, activities and competitions. You can test your piloting skills on a virtual jet (CQU offers a degree in Aviation Technology), win a PlayStation2, try claymation, explore a train simulator and lots more.

“CQU offers about 100 undergraduate and postgraduate programs. School leavers and adult learners will have a chance on Sunday to visit faculty displays, take campus tours and meet with lecturers, students and alumni. There’s nothing like visiting CQU to get a feel for the University and our services and programs,” explained Mike Donahue, an Open Day coordinator.

A full schedule of events, seminars and activities will be available from the University’s homepage www.cqu.edu.au .

All prospective students are strongly urged to attend an 'Enrolling at CQU' seminar, which gives prospective students (of any age) and their families information on CQU application procedures, fees and academic standards.

CQU Rockhampton Open Day is a great day to sort out career choices and university programs.

CQU will offer information sessions for high school students and adult learners beginning to plan their future, entitled 'Your career choice'. You will be able to take a Careers Test on Sunday and see what may be best for you.

Adult learners who may have not completed Year 12 or who need to build their academic skills should attend the 'Alternative Entry to CQU for Adult Learners' session. These special entry programs instil in adult learners the skills and confidence necessary to embark on tertiary study. They cover communication, mathematics, computing, independent learning skills, study skills and library/information literacy skills.

CQU, rated among the best universities in Australia for Positive Student Outcomes, will offer information across its entire range of programs.

“There’s strong demand for qualified health and social work professionals in Central Queensland and CQU graduates are getting jobs,” said Donahue. There will be opportunities to review Nursing, Health, Human Movement and Social Work programs and discover career opportunities in sport management, physical fitness and therapies, community health and welfare and more.

Sunday will also feature seminars on CQU’s popular new business degrees. Business students can now specialise in Property, Marketing, Consumer Marketing, Human Resources Management, Tourism, Management, Law and Taxation, Economics and Finance, Administration, or E-Commerce.

Prospective students wanting to develop their creativity and technical talents in a range of new and ever-changing technologies should attend the seminars on Information Technology, Information Systems and Aviation Technology.

CQU expects that interest in Communications, Journalism and Multimedia programs will continue. Newly enrolled students in these programs are taking advantage of increasing employment opportunities as these areas of study converge and mature, underpinning future communications and information exchange.

Anyone looking for careers in civil, electrical and mechanical engineering are encouraged to speak to CQU staff about the only project-based learning Engineering degree of its kind in Australia, the CQU Bachelor of Engineering Co-op. Engineering Co-op students receive paid, formal work placement at some of Australia’s – and the world’s – leading companies.

There will be two sessions on Education, Entertainment and Enterprising, which cover CQU’s leading degrees in Learning Management and Creative Arts. Visitors will see why ‘real life’ experiences with professional entertainers give CQU Performing Arts students the edge.

Science seminars will be very popular, according to organisers, because school leavers have a growing interest in some professions portrayed on TV such as forensic scientists, medical investigators, and psychologists. Open Day visitors can learn about CQU programs that could lead to these and other jobs plus find out about careers in conservation, biophysics, environmental monitoring, and mathematics.

CQU Gladstone will open its doors to the community for information on Wednesday August 3 from 6pm to 9pm and CQU Bundaberg will do the same on Thursday August 18 from 6pm to 9pm.
