CQU sides win friends at games

Central Queensland University athletes enjoyed a great week of sport and social activities, despite not tasting on field success at the 2003 Drinksmart Northern University Games in Brisbane last week.

CQU was outclassed by its southern cousins as Games co-host University of Queensland was crowned overall champions. CQU teams participated in beach volleyball (men's), golf (men's), squash (men's), touch (men's), volleyball (women's), with the highest result being a fifth place in beach volleyball.

As a result the team was relegated to last position at the end of the preliminary matches, and its other victories, including wins over the eventual bronze and silver medallists, QUT and UQ, did not count.

Despite this result, CQU and former Australian squash representative, Kevin Kidd, described the games as the best sporting event he had ever attended.

“I have been on Australian and State sporting tours, but this week has been the best by far,” Kidd said.

A total of 31 athletes enjoyed a great week of sport and fun with the social activities for the week including pyjama, beach, mobster and porn star themed parties. Final results for CQU teams; Beach Volleyball (5th), Golf (13th), Squash (6th), Touch (9th), and Volleyball (6th). The results at the Northern University Games will mean only a small number of CQU students will be attending the Australian University Games, which will be held in Newcastle in late September. So far CQU athletes are set to compete in swimming and athletics while the squash team will be hoping to receive a wildcard entry into the event.
