Soccer ref reflects on busy year

A CQUniversity nursing student is keen to focus on her love of nursing after a busy and exciting year relishing in her other love - soccer.

After refereeing soccer for 11 years including games at the Athens Olympics in 2004 and the Women's World Cup in 2003, Rockhampton's Jacqueline Leleu was again granted one of the most prestigious opportunities in the game - to referee at the Beijing Olympics.

"I refereed China verse Sweden in China's opening game with 44,000 spectators and then I refereed Nigeria verse Brazil with 66,000 spectators," she said.

"I also met some very famous people like Pele, Maradona, Ian Thorpe, Rodger Federer and Grant Hackett."

Before becoming a referee, Leleu played soccer for 5 years and then took on the referring of the Rockhampton men's first division. She has held her international badge since 2000.

Although things are sure to slow down a bit this year for Jacqueline, life is still hectic. She is mum to 3 young children, Rachael, Jack and Oliver, and will complete her Bachelor of Nursing degree this year.

"I am interested in pursuing a career in emergency nursing, oncology and maybe later nursing education."
