CQU Mackay even more 'on course' for simulation training

CQU Mackay is even more on course to become a centre for simulation training - servicing the mining, engineering and construction industries - thanks to $100,000 funding for development of a specialised education program.

Member for Dawson De-Anne Kelly welcomed the funding announced by Minister for Vocational and Further Education Andrew Robb on October 19.

The Mackay-based MP noted the initiative would complement the $9 million Mining Simulator Research, Development and Training Centre to be based at the campus.

CQU Mackay to get $9 million Mining Simulator Centre

"It all fits together well. Now we have the Research and Training Centre, the opportunity for academic qualifications, and hands-on training for job seekers."

The latest funding will support the Mackay Area Industry Network (MAIN) program to develop a Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma in Simulation Technology and Learning, in association with CQU.

Ms Kelly said the initiative would ensure simulation trainers were available to meet the increasing demand for simulation training, "which has the potential to cut costs and fast-track the training of workers to address skills shortages".

Mr Robb said the nation needed "to develop as many flexible and innovative training approaches to skill as many people as we can for the workforce".

"This program will increase the opportunities for workers to train for jobs in these industries using simulation," he said.

Head of Campus Professor Trevor Davison said he had created the specialised education proposal to help CQU become "a leader in helping teachers and trainers develop skills and expertise in using simulation technology to help people learn".

"If things go well, the program design and materials will be ready simultaneous with the opening of the new Simulation R, D & T building," he said.
