Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

New leadership team spread across campuses 

In striving to develop one of the most engaged universities in Australia, CQUniversity's Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Bowman has announced the appointment of a team of new leaders.

CQUniversity operates 10 schools within two faculties each led by a Dean. As of August, eight out of 10 appointments have been made, as well as the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research).

Following through on initiatives to build up Central Queensland campuses, many of the new appointees will lead the University from campuses outside the original administrative centre in Rockhampton.

New leaders and their home campuses include:

  • Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Head of Campus, Gladstone: Professor Chad Hewitt, Director of the National Centre for Marine Conservation & Resource Sustainability at the Australian Maritime College at the University of Tasmania, commences in November.
  • Dean of School of Nursing and Midwifery, Mackay: Professor Ysanne Chapman, from Monash University's Department of Nursing & Midwifery at Gippsland, commences in September.
  • Dean of School of Engineering & Built Environment, Gladstone: Dr Alan McPhail, from CQUniversity Sydney where he most recently developed CQUniversity's Master of Management (Engineering), which will be offered from 2011.
  • Dean of School of Health & Human Services, Bundaberg: Professor Andrew Bridges, from the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences at Coventry University in the UK, commences in August.
  • Dean of the School of Medical and Applied Sciences at Rockhampton: Professor Grant Stanley hails from Victoria University, where he most recently acted as Head of the School of Molecular Sciences.
  • Dean of School of Commerce and Law, Rockhampton: Associate Professor Robert Fisher, a Senior Lecturer in Law at CQUniversity has been appointed as of August.
  • Dean of School of Education, Bundaberg: Associate Professor Helen Huntly, the Acting Dean of the School was appointed Dean in August.
  • Dean of School of Creative and Performing Arts, Mackay: Associate Professor Matthew Marshall from the New Zealand School of Music, and one of New Zealand's leading classical guitarists, commences soon.
  • Dean of School of Management and Marketing, Gladstone: Professor Roger March comes from the Australian School of Business and the University of New South Wales where he was Director, Accreditation.
  • The Dean of School of Humanities and Communication has not been appointed yet. CQUniversity Professor Wally Woods is Acting Dean.
  • The Dean of School of Information and Communication Technology has not been appointed yet. Associate Professor Greg Whymark is Acting Dean.

In addition, CQUniversity has developed 20 new programs and awards for delivery in 2011 in areas such as: Property Valuation, Law, Engineering Management, Health Promotion, Financial Planning, Sonography, Medical Imaging, Medical Science, Mental Health Nursing, Safety, Health & Environment and Paramedic Science.
