Rocky music guru embarks on punk rock documentary

Rockhampton music researcher Jim Douglas has begun work on a short documentary film based on punk rocker/come librarian Cameron Borg.

‘A Piss in the Ocean: Cameron Borg, the Last Punk Rocker?’ hopes to ask questions about Cameron’s creative experiences and his past as a member of several independent punk bands during the 1980s.

PhotoID:2810 The name ‘A Piss in the Ocean...’ comes from the title of a magazine and music distribution label that Cameron has been operating since about 1987. The title refers to the idea that someone operating outside the workings of the multinational-run music industry might be seen to be doing just that, ‘pissing’ in an ocean of conformity.

While exploring Cameron’s past for the film, Douglas will interview members of current Brisbane bands Screamfeeder and Halfway who have and continue to have links with Cameron.

“Cameron’s story is an interesting one on many levels. While it can be seen as one person’s continuing efforts to succeed, with little financial reward, it is also part of a larger story about identity that has resonance with how often marginalized, creative activities exist in regional centres,” Douglas explained.

The film has recruited Rockhampton’s Peter Lawrence as cameraman, CQU Honours’ student Jane Austen as production assistant and editor and ABC Capricornia’s Craig Zonca as narrator.

Chair of the Visual New Media Research Group Denis Cryle has given his support to the project.

Douglas hopes to launch the film early next year.
