Since then, Aaron has lived in Italy and gained knowledge in the European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS), including concept, design, application, configuration and testing.

"Living in Italy gave me a great opportunity professionally and personally. It allowed me to be a part of a different culture, foster new relationships and to gain a better understanding of the technical solutions that are offered all throughout Europe, and how these could apply to the Australian environment."

Since returning from Italy, Aaron has been working as a systems engineer on the Advanced Train Management System (ATMS) project, focussing on system requirement specification and design.

Next year will see him take on a new role in Portfolio Management at Ansaldo STS.

"The Portfolio Management role will deal with assembling and managing the portfolio of products and platforms for Ansaldo STS. It is a Research &
Development type role that looks at our current range of products and solutions in comparison with market needs and assesses whether we need to
develop better, standardised solutions," Aaron said.

"This role will enable me to work closely with Business Development and Marketing in determining the needs of our customers and presenting the strengths of our solutions, and also with
Development teams for generating new products and applications."

* Aaron Fraser was recently recognised during the AusRail 2009 Plus Gala Dinner (Nov 19), winning the 2009 Rail Industry Award for Excellence. In 2008, he gained the IRSE (Institution of Railway Signal Engineers Australasia section) prize for topping his class with a perfect WGPA of 7.
