CQU shows confidence in Emerald with increased courses

The township of Emerald continues to expand at a rapid rate because of a high demand for staff in mining and related industries.  This trend, however, creates problems for local professional firms because of the unavailability of qualified staff to fill advertised positions.

In an attempt to address these issues in Emerald, Central Queensland University has responded by increasing course offerings for the Bachelor of Accounting Degree for 2008.  For the first time in its 18-year history, CQU Emerald will now offer the complete 3-year Accounting degree internally.

The campus will host a launch for the Accounting degree from 7pm on Friday, December 7, at the Maraboon Tavern. Guest speaker Professor John Rolfe will address 'the changing face of accounting and other business degrees'.

This exciting opportunity gives students the benefit of facilitated study group support, aided by an academic mentor, compared to their previous experience of lonely external study.

CQU Emerald Campus Coordinator, Mrs Gai Sypher, said the introduction of increased courses at the local campus has been a work in progress for a number of years.

"CQU has shown confidence in the potential of the region and all we need now, is the support of students in attending lecturers and tutes on campus," she said.

Mrs Sypher said that as soon as the student numbers start increasing at Emerald Campus, the potential exists to introduce other programs.

The campus boasts a new on-line computer lab, a variety of student services, and access to first class technology, library resources and modern classrooms including an auditorium. High-quality residential accommodation is also available.

The campus is situated in the grounds of the Australian Agricultural College and is surrounded by lush parks and gardens.  All this contributes to an environment that makes study a pleasure.
