Harvey qualifies for the Hawaiian Ironman World Championship

Senior Lecturer with the School of Management at CQU, Harvey Griggs took second place in the recent Ironman New Zealand.

PhotoID:409 Mr Griggs is now qualified for the Hawaiian Ironman World Championship in October 2003.

Mr Griggs said he was surprised when he was informed of his success, as only three qualifying positions were available for his 50 to 54 years age group.

"I ran the first 20km averaging five-and-a-half minutes per kilometre pace and then the wheels fell off over the next 20km," Mr Griggs told a reporter from The Morning Bulletin.

Mr Griggs displayed a relaxed attitude to being an athlete as he compared ironman racing with a game of golf.

"On the golf course you can produce a PB (personal best) and still place 20th, ironmans are the same with a lot of things out of your control," he said
