Full house at 'Footloose' in Mackay

It seems that Mackay audiences are more than happy to be footloose and fancy free as CQU's Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music production of the musical 'Footloose' opened last Thursday.

Friday and Saturday night performances were sold out, with other performances near capacity.

PhotoID:1520 Leading Australian choreographer Keith Hawley has been putting the Conservatorium students through their paces for the past month in preparation for this year’s major production.

Over 30 Bachelor of Music Theatre students performed song and dance numbers from the 80s hit musical, with lead performances by Steven Sowden and Astin Blaik, both in their third year of study.

Sydney-based Hawley, whose career highlights include working as choreographer for Jackie Love on her international tour, Kelley Abbey in 'Sweet Charity' and Simon Gallaher in 'The Mikado', is also a professional photographer and his work appears in the program for 'The Lion King', now showing in Sydney.

“The students have an incredible enthusiasm for live performance and 'Footloose' was a great vehicle to showcase the range of talent on offer at CQCM,” he said.

“The dance routines required the students to be extremely fit, while maintaining a sense of fun.".

CQCM sub-dean Judith Brown is thrilled with the standard of performance and was not surprised that the musical matched the outstanding success of last year’s major production 'Chicago'.

PhotoID:1521 “Sell-out performances this year and last, reflect the quality of CQCM productions,” she said.

“The students brought great energy to the stage and this outstanding show provided them with the opportunity to showcase their tremendous commitment to performance.".

Auditions are currently under way for the 2005 intake of students for CQCM programs in music, music theatre, jazz studies and the performing arts. For information please contact Kim Mackenzie on 4940 7800.
