Karen Black has been an ideal role model for her kids, showing it is possible to juggle career and study commitments while achieving good results.
Karen, who graduated at CQUniversity's March 3 Rockhampton ceremony, says her main reason for study was to enhance career opportunities in her current field of human resources.

"I did the STEPS (preparatory program) initially after being out of tertiary study and doing this was the catalyst to get back into study mode," she said.
"I also wanted to complete my degree before I turned 50 and I achieved this by fast-tracking and studying three terms each year."
Karen completed a Bachelor of Business (HRM) degree with Distinction in only three and a half years, gaining credit for previous study. It would normally take six years to complete part-time.
Needless to say, eldest son Ethan has been impressed and has turned to his mum for study tips as he pursues a degree in Information Technology. Youngest daughter Bronte has also caught the study bug and is planning to pursue a career in medicine when she starts university studies in 2013.
Karen started her working life as a pathology assistant and is now hoping to climb the career ladder, thanks to her new qualification. She says it's been great having a supportive partner and family.
