Passionate researcher holds combination for success

Maria Raciti (pictured), who moved from Mackay to Rockhampton in 1991 to study at Central Queensland University, was among eight researchers awarded a PhD from CQU during graduations on Friday and Saturday (March 5-6).

In those 13 years the former North Mackay High School student also earned a CQU Bachelor of Business (Marketing) degree, received First Class Honours and was presented with Faculty scholarship and an Australian Postgraduate Award.

PhotoID:1355 “I have a great sense of personal satisfaction... undertaking my PhD was by far the most challenging experience of my life,” explained the 30 year old from her office on the Sunshine Coast.

“Maria is one of those dream students, dedicated, hardworking and competitive and very bright. You put that combination together and you get success,” explained Associate Professor Tony Ward from CQU's School of Marketing and Tourism. Associate Professor Dr Ward supervised Ms Raciti’s Honours and PhD research.

Dr Raciti, heralded as CQU’s first Indigenous PhD recipient, is currently coordinating courses for about 700 students as an Associate Lecturer in Marketing at the University of the Sunshine Coast. She also Chairs of the Marketing Committee for the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network.

“I’m passionate about my teaching and I particularly enjoy working with first year students,” she said. Dr Raciti credits much of her success to the support, understanding and guidance from her husband (Christopher), family, and fellow research students – “the only people who know what you’re going through.” Dr Raciti’s research has made a significant contribution to the business of marketing by focusing on relationship marketing techniques.

PhotoID:1356 “I have tremendous respect for Maria’s unique contributions. Building and enhancing relationships with customers is one way a business can separate itself from the pack,” explained Associate Professor Ward “I am grateful for the support I received from CQU. The benevolence and goodwill from the Faculty of Business & Law and the Office of Research certainly made the road a little easier,” added Dr Raciti.
