Central Queensland University has agreed to continue their support for meatworkers affected by the recent closure of Rockhampton’s Lakes Creek Meatworks.
The COIN Internet Academy – a joint project between CQU’s Faculty of Informatics and Communication and the Rockhampton City Council – has to date conducted basic computer training for 24 meatworkers involving six two-hour training sessions.
The final six workers completed their training on Wednesday 11 September.
Wal Taylor, of COIN, said 18 of this group will continue on with Internet training at COIN, while 35 other meatworkers, who have been on a waiting list, will participate in the next basic computer training sessions as part of the project extension.
“The aims of the training are to give displaced meatworkers the confidence to seek jobs online, to seek out training for jobs using computer skills and to establish and maintain their social networks online,” Mr Taylor said.
