Suzanne finds her calling researching hospital phone system

Suzanne Craig was working on nursing IT and information systems (informatics) in a Toronto hospital when she decided to quit her job and study them instead.

By chance she heard an inspirational conference address by CQUniversity academic Dr Evelyn Hovenga and decided to link with the Rockhampton-based institution for her PhD journey.

"CQUni allowed me to do my research on site, at a distance in Canada and gave me continuing access to databases through the library system," she said.

"Any needs I had with textbooks were very promptly met and they were so supportive, it was a wonderful experience. It made me feel that it was a circle supporting me to do my research as opposed to me having to meet the needs of the University and the requirements of the Uni."

Suzanne was able to complete her thesis on the 'Structural Analysis of Mobile Communication Technology: Case Study of Wireless Nurse Call System' and attended her graduation on February 16 in Rockhampton.

In considering implementation of the technology, she was able to view historical documents, undertake observational studies, hold focus groups with nurses and interview nurse managers and the technical team responsible for implementing and maintaining the system.

"I looked at communication between patients and nurses and nurses and other healthcare providers in terms of workflow processes and workplace practices," Suzanne said.

"Nurses would tell me about their difficulties and challenges faced in integrating the devices with their practice."

Suzanne has already delivered her recommendations to the hospital and the completed report will be available in the hospital library to inform future practitioners.

She is returning to Canada to continue with her consulting company, Healthcare Business Solutions, which delivers healthcare performance management projects for local government.
