Nurse student hosts have CD ROM back-up

Hospital and other health agency representatives who host our nursing students during practical placements now have access to a CD ROM to guide them through their role.

Lecturer and clinical coordinator Kerry Reid-Searl said the support given to undergraduate nursing students during their clinical experience is pivotal to their success.

Up until now, the practicum hosts have relied on hard copy resources, workshops and academic support links.

Ms Reid-Searl said that while this model of support seemed to work in metropolitan regions, the rural and remote hosts felt less supported.

She said the School of Nursing and Health Studies and Multimedia Design Centre at CQU had co-developed the CD ROM as an additional support tool.

"The CD ROM includes links to professional bodies and multimedia elements including video to portray different student preceptor situations. It can be self-directed and self-paced," Ms Reid-Searl said.

The CD ROM is due to be delivered by late 2003 to all organisations that provide support for CQU nursing students.

The CD Rom project is being featured in the Royal College of Nursing Review & the Royal College of Nursing connections magazine.
