CQU tour leads to rescue service donation

Two recent bus tours showcasing significant Darumbal Aboriginal sites have produced an unexpected windfall for the Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service.

Conducted by the Central Queensland University Community Program and facilitated by local Aboriginal activist Bob Muir, the tours took the 100 participants on a fascinating drive through Darumbal lands, customs and stories from Mt Archer to the coast and back again.

PhotoID:3097 “Bob Muir is passionate about preserving Central Queensland history for his people and his passion certainly transferred itself to those of us lucky enough to be on those tours,” said Mrs Glenys Kirkwood, the CQU Community Program Co-ordinator.

“Each and every one of us came away with a clearer and more sympathetic understanding of the region's original owners,” she said.

“The discussions with Bob had been about doing one tour so when the demand for places necessitated contracting him for a second tour, he agreed, on the proviso that his fee should go to the Helicopter Rescue Service,” Mrs Kirkwood said.

“This was an extremely generous personal gesture on his behalf and one that delighted our tour participants".

“We are lucky to have the Helicopter Rescue Service here in CQ and it needs all the support it can get,” said Mr Muir.

“As a person who spends a great deal of time in the bush, it's reassuring to know their help is available when needed so I’m happy to lend a hand whenever I can” he said.

Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service is only partially funded by State Government and relies heavily on community donations to continue its service.
