Research fine-tunes interventions to curb intimate partner abuse

Research results have shown significant implications for intimate partner abuse interventions in the Bowen Basin and Mackay region.

That is according to Heather Nancarrow*, who said the research explored correlations between intimate partner abuse and a range of factors, including characteristics of the mining industry.

Ms Nancarrow will discuss details of her quantitative research conducted with Associate Professor Stewart Lockie and Dr Sanjay Sharma, during the next in CQUniversity's series of Research Unplugged sessions.

The discussion-based presentation, free of charge, will be held from 6pm-7pm on Thursday, November 27, at Rockhampton's Ginger Mule Tapas Bar in William Street. Finger foods will be provided.

The event is timely, falling during the same week as Tuesday's White Ribbon Day .

Please RSVP to Dr James Douglas (j.douglas@cqu.edu.au or 4930 9371) before the session, which is presented by Healthy Communities at the University.

"The research was conducted to ascertain the prevalence and nature of male-to-female intimate partner abuse in the Bowen Basin region, and to explore statistically significant correlations between intimate partner abuse and a range of factors, including characteristics of the mining industry," Ms Nancarrow said.

"The research found such correlations with a range of socio-demographic and behavioural factors, as well as severely compromised mental health.  These results have significant implications for intimate partner abuse interventions in the region."

* Ms Nancarrow is Director of the Queensland Centre for Family and Domestic Violence Research, based at CQUniversity Mackay.
