Maltese exhibition showcased at the Fair

The Central Queensland University Art Collection will showcase a Maltese photographic exhibition at the CQ Multicultural Fair and CQU Open Day at CQU Rockhampton this Sunday August 17.

‘Our Shared Heritage’ will showcase photographs of Maltese migrant families from the Mackay district during the period 1883 and 1940. The exhibition consists of 46 photographs and 105 family charts documenting the lives of Maltese migrants who settled in the Mackay region.

PhotoID:981 A display of unusual Maltese tools will accompany the exhibition and a local flavour will be added through a display of memorabilia and special objects belonging to Rockhampton’s Maltese families.

The exhibition has been created by curators Carmel Baretta and Laraine Schembri from Mackay, who have already taken the exhibition to all capital cities in Australia and to Malta.

The exhibition has also attracted a support act, a Maltese dance troupe from Mackay’s International Dance Affair.

‘Our Shared Heritage’ will be staged on the ground floor of the CQU Library. The curators will conduct floorwalks at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm at the Fair.

The exhibition will be a highlight of the Multicultural Fair from 10am to 4pm, but will continue to be open to the public during library operating hours until Tuesday September 9. The CQU library is open Monday to Thursday 8.45am to 7pm, Friday 8.45am to 5pm, Saturday from 10am to 1pm and Sunday from 2 to 5pm.

The ‘Our Shared Heritage’ exhibition has been sponsored by Festivals Australia, a Commonwealth Government Program, and the CQ Multicultural Fair is a joint initiative between CQU and ABC Capricornia, with support from The Morning Bulletin and the Rockhampton City Council.

Look out for your CQ Multicultural Fair and CQU Open Day program inserted in this Friday’s The Morning Bulletin and Central Queensland News and in Thursday’s Central Telegraph.
