Global humanity issues highlighted by Mackay digital media artists

The mistreatment of the human race inspired the creation of Artspace Mackay’s latest exhibition Four Elements of Apathy.
Created by local artists Martin Francis, May-Britt Mosshammer and Ashley Holmes the work seeks to highlight how minority groups are marginalised from mainstream society. “For many years now we have seen men, women and children, caged, tortured and mistreated by governments, corporations, religious organizations and society itself,” Mr Francis said.
“This is a call for us to remember that it is easy to discriminate against people and be apathetic to their plight, when those people are hidden away out of our sight and mind.
“In 2002 alone 1526 people were executed in 31 countries worldwide. The message in the artwork is saying that it is often very easy to discriminate against people you can’t see and perhaps this is why refugees in Australia are placed in isolated desert locations.
“This work forms a silent protest to remind people that inhumane acts are being upheld by institutions and bodies that should be representing the human rights of all people.” As a Central Queensland University multimedia lecturer, Mr Francis used wood, metal and plaster to build the central monolith that projects three films created by each artist.
