A CQU Psychology and Welfare student is targeting addictive behaviour by establishing self-help programs in New Zealand and Central Queensland.
After completing her first of two practicum placements for her degree in New Zealand, Bachelor of Arts distance student Brenda Elkins has returned home to Gladstone with an ambition to establish a Smart Recovery Self-Help Addiction Program in New Zealand and later in Gladstone.
During her placement in New Zealand, Ms Elkins worked on a similar innovative social program which had a strong cultural focus.
“As part of the placement I also worked collaboratively with my CQU supervisors with a view to starting a Smart Recovery Self-Help Addictions Programme in New Zealand,” Ms Elkins explained.
“I have plans in the near future to commence this program in Gladstone as well – free to all those that require assistance with problems with addictive behaviour.”.
The program will help people recover from all types of addictive behaviors, including: alcoholism, drug abuse, substance abuse, drug addiction, alcohol abuse, gambling addiction, cocaine addiction, and addiction to other substances and activities. The program may be an alternative to Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.
