iPhone heads up portable computer revolution

The iPhone is leading a ubiquitous computer revolution, according to CQUniversity Gold Coast researcher Dr Michael Cowling.

Speaking at a ResearchExpo presentation this week, Dr Cowling said: "No longer will people be tied to their desks, with mobile computing devices allowing us to use computers anywhere that we go".

"The iPhone is leading this revolution, providing the everyday user with an interface that makes it feel like you are holding the web in your hands.

"Once you understand this future of computing, the possibilities are endless."

Research conducted by Dr Cowling in collaboration with Assistant Professor James R. Birt at Bond University leverages the ‘go anywhere' aspects of ubiquitous computing to develop an iPhone application for sound recognition that allows headphone-wearing joggers to be made aware of dangerous situations so they can take action.

Dr Cowling feels that 2010 will be a year of phenomenal growth for ubiquitous computing.
