Artists draw on 'forest' of poems and stories

Poems and stories flowing out the Idiom23 writer's workshop (in the Byfield forest) last year have inspired a range of artworks, which have in turn inspired more literature.

The best of the intertwined output from local artists and writers will be on show during an afternoon soiree function at The Gallery Emu Park on Sunday, July 27 from 2pm, complete with musical entertainment, readings and refreshments. Details available via Brian Kehoe on 4938 8198.

The original idea for the writers/artists exhibition in July came from coast-based artist Ross Coulter, Brian Abrahams (The Gallery) and Kristin Hannaford (poet and writers' tutor).

Dr Liz Huf from CQUniversity's Idiom23 Literary Magazine encouraged interested people to come along to meet the artists and writers and experience their works across the forms of painting, sculpture, pottery, poetry, short stories woodcarving, calligraphy and more.

"Artists have been very keen to be involved," she said. "Some interesting 'collaborations' are being developed between artists and writers."

"Local writers have been inspired not only by our painters, but by potters and ceramic artists, wood carvers and sculptors whose works of art - whether in oils, watercolour, clay, mahogany or stone - have made a lasting impression."

The writer's workshop last year featured CQUniversity creative writing lecturer Dr Lynda Hawryluk and poet Kristin Hannaford.

Dr Huf said keen writers were also encouraged to attend this year's Idiom23 Magazine's workshop on Creative Writing and a Sense of Place, from September 12-14 at North Keppel Island Environmental Education Centre. Details are available from workshop coordinator Dr Lynda Hawryluk on l.hawryluk@cqu.edu.au or 07 4923 2009 or Liz via 07 4938 3746 or l.huf@cqu.edu.au .

Idiom23 and its related workshops receive support from CQUniversity's Regional Council of the Arts (RCotA).
