Gold Coast shining example of cultural diversity
Published on 09 February, 2010
People from 52 nationalities shared traditions and cultures at CQUniversity Gold Coast's 2nd Annual International Day celebrations.
Officially marking celebrations for Australia Day, India Republic Day and Chinese New Year, the event showcases diversity and provides a platform for the development of cultural awareness on the campus and across the wider community.
A colourful start to the year at the Gold Coast
Students and staff came dressed in national costumes - some more authentic than others - and prizes were awarded to the best dressed male and female. The Aussies turned on a traditional BBQ while students from other nations shared traditions and edible delights.
Arab students, resplendent in costumes from the region, provided a visual and sensory feast with the Saudi students sharing freshly brewed aromatic coffee and a selection of dates from different Saudi regions. Their regional neighbours, the students of the UAE, invited guests into a desert tent which displayed traditional costumes and hospitality, including sweet and savoury food prepared by the UAE students, and delicious green tea flavoured with mint or lemon.
A highlight of the day were the camel rides which were a new experience for so many people, irrespective of their background, while Chinese New Year came early with the loud drums setting the beat for the colourful and cheeky Lion Dancers. These wonderful experiences made the local news and were talked about for days and photos of the day overflowed on Face Book.
