Uni-sponsored Winter Music School has Cathedral climax

The CQUniversity-sponsored SunWater and Stanwell Winter Music School returned to Rockhampton in July 2008, encouraging Queensland's budding young ‘musicians of the future'.

The event climaxed with a gala concert in St Paul's Cathedral last Friday evening (July 11). Photographer Peter Lawrence captured images from the final rehearsal.

From July 6 to 12, music students from all over Queensland and beyond met in Rockhampton to take part in an intensive and inspiring week of musical learning and performing.

CQUniversity is proud of its expanded commitment to the Winter School program with the addition of composition, guitar and an in-service component for instrumental music teachers.

As in 2006, CQUniversity provided a number of scholarships and access to its facilities.

Held in Rockhampton at Rockhampton Girls Grammar School, and presented by Southern Cross Soloists as part of the ensemble's annual music education program for regional Queensland, students gained from a concentrated learning environment, incorporating high quality solo, chamber and ensemble music through an instrumental and vocal faculty that features some of the finest musicians and teachers in Australia.

"These tutors, many of whom hold key positions in tertiary institutions across the country, provided these budding young artists with an unparalleled opportunity to survey the possibilities of their musical journey," said Artistic Director and Clarinettist Paul Dean. "It was a chance for students to progress their musical learning rapidly."

Students had the opportunity to be involved in a full symphony orchestra, concert band, massed choir, stage band, chamber music groups, and brass, string and percussion ensembles. They also participated in workshops for all instruments, voice, keyboard, guitar and composition.

Designed for secondary students from all state and non-government schools who are serious about playing music and keen for a challenge, the SunWater and Stanwell Winter Music School was a highlight of the 2008 music calendar.

"We had an even greater program than 2006 and more learning opportunities for secondary music students as part of the 2008 program. Engaging in a rewarding and valuable learning environment, students got to meet and work alongside like-minded musicians from around the state," Dean added.

"This School gave musicians, especially those in regional areas, a unique opportunity to be educated, inspired and encouraged in their musical pursuits. It bridged the road from class room to concert stage with hands-on tuition from some of Australia's best musicians and teachers."

"Building on the success achieved in the 2006 Winter Music School, this year has been possible because of the generous support from sponsors: SunWater, Stanwell Corporation and the CQUniversity in Rockhampton. This project also receives significant support from Arts Queensland."
