CQU represented on national list of top teachers

Jenny Simpson, from Learning Support in the Division of Teaching and Learning Services, is among 210 Australian teachers to receive citations for outstanding contributions to student learning.

The citations worth $10,000 each have been announced as the part of the 2006 Carrick Awards for Australian University Teaching.

PhotoID:3257 Ms Simpson's citation reads: "For creating an inspirational learning and teaching environment that instils marginalised learners with the self-confidence, skills and knowledge to embark on a university education".

Awards will be presented to Queensland recipients at Brisbane's Customs House on Monday, August 7.

For the last 14 years, Ms Simpson has been teaching at CQU Rockhampton in the Language and Learning writing course of the STEPS (Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies) program.

"I'm delighted ... it's a celebration of the STEPS program in its 20th anniversary year," she said.

"Having taught almost every year from years 1 to 12 in the past at primary and secondary schools, it's been wonderful in recent years teaching adults who have been an inspiration for their courage. It can be scary for them to consider taking on university studies.

"This award is the icing on the cake. Teaching has been a passion and I really do thank my students for I've learnt plenty from working with them over the years. They've been an inspiration".

To date, Jenny has personally taught well over 1000 STEPS students, and testimony to her outstanding contribution as a teacher are the many comments and testimonials from past students.

In addition, Jenny’s enduring contribution to scholarship and research has been realised through cited book chapters, conference proceeding papers and refereed journal articles pertaining to her teaching experiences and philosophies.

Karen Becker, from the School of Management in the Faculty of Business and Informatics, was also a nominee in the category of ‘Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning’ this year.
