An elder from the traditional owners of the land now occupied by the Queensland Centre for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence welcomed the Centre’s new director recently.
Unable to attend the official opening in October due to illness, Yuibera elder Nita Kemp, joined by husband Tim and son Phillip, greeted new Director Heather Nancarrow at CQU Mackay last Friday.
Ms Nancarrow said although the Centre operated in a statewide capacity it was important to remember the Centre was based on the Yuibera peoples’ land.
“Our meeting not only gave Mrs Kemp an opportunity to see the Centre, but gave us a chance to acknowledge that we are working on their traditional land,” she said.
Phillip Kemp spoke at the Centre’s opening on behalf of the Yuibera people.
CQU Qld Centre for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Director Heather Nancarrow is available for interview by telephoning 4940 7837.
