10,000 steps receives top national award

Rockhampton’s 10,000 Steps project won the 2003 Heart Foundation Kellogg Local Government Overall National Award and National Physical Activity Project Award this week.

Central Queensland University’s Associate Professor Kerry Mummery received the award on behalf of the program and The Rockhampton City Council at the General Assembly of Local Government in Canberra.

PhotoID:1098 “This community-wide, multi-strategy physical activity project funded by Queensland Health has made a significant impact on physical activity in the Rockhampton community," Assoc. Prof. Mummery said.

“The tip of the iceberg was the step-counting pedometers that were promoted for loan or sale in the city. They really helped people set their activity goals and monitor their activity levels.”.

Mayor of Rockhampton, Councillor Margaret Strelow said Rockhampton should take great pride in receiving this award.

“10,000 Steps has captured the community’s imagination and is a great example of the community, Council and University working together,” she said.

PhotoID:1099 “The Award recognises the outstanding efforts of Associate Professor Kerry Mummery and his team, and of the community’s overwhelming response and enthusiastic support.”.

The Heart Foundation Kellogg Local Government Awards recognise local governments that put into practice projects, policies and programs which can help prevent cardiovascular disease.
