Fish Stories: MYO Sushi

Give a man a Norri Role and you feed him for a day.
Teach him to make Norri Roles and everyone has a great time, makes new friendships and creates a huge mess in the Student Room.
This variation of the ancient Chinese philosophy, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day but teach him to fish and you feed him for life”, proved to be quite true and a lot of fun on the Brisbane and Gold Coast campuses recently.
The “Make Your Own” (MYO) Sushi lunch was organised by Ray Scarlett, the STEP Manager for the Brisbane and Gold Coast Campuses, to promote the upcoming courses and to encourage a social atmosphere between staff and students of both campuses. In addition to promoting the STEP courses, such lunches in the past have proven to be extremely successful in assisting students with the often daunting task of getting to know their lecturers, fellow students and other University staff, in the early stages of the semester.
“We have found that events such as this are of great assistance to students with settling into a new semester and dealing with all the feelings of doubt and nervousness that some students experience. It helps them feel accepted and comfortable in their new environment”, said Peter Mendham, Campus Director, CQU Brisbane International Campus. The lunch was prepared by Young Beamish, Graduation Officer for Brisbane and Gold Coast campuses, with all the necessary ingredients for making the finest Norri Roles laid out for all to attempt to make their own roles. Under the instruction of Young, Ray Scarlett and Anthony Jones, some exquisite, and some not so good specimens were created.
(Pictured: Mansoor Gill and Gamal Hafeez are hooked.) Peter Mendham, the Brisbane Campus Director was on hand to witness the spectacle of students and staff attempts at making the Norri Roles. Lisa Botchway, the Student Association Assistant at the Brisbane Campus, shared secrets of the finer elements of Sushi making with Marketing Lecturer, Patrick Goh.
While most took advantage of the opportunity to learn from the campus’s resident experts, others sought safety in the familiar and simply loaded up their plates with the fresh and unusual ingredients.
All in all a great time was had by all and some even learned how to make a Norri Role.
