Uni rep chairs conference for 'older' Girl Guides

Almost 100 delegates from 31 Trefoil Guilds throughout Queensland met at Cool Waters on the Capricorn Coast recently (September 7-9) for their 30th Biennial Conference.

Trefoil Guilds are made up of older women who meet, under the banner of Girl Guides Australia, to support their communities by carrying on the good work that is the ethic of guiding, and for fellowship.

CQU Community Liaison Officer Glenys Kirkwood was invited to chair the Conference which was attended by Member for Keppel Paul Houlihan, Fitzroy Shire Councillor Desley Rial and Founder and Chairman of Angel Flight Bill Bristow.

"There was a deal of interest shown about CQU by many of the participants from other areas and each attendee went home with a CQU pack' to distribute amongst their Trefoil and Guide communities," Ms Kirkwood said.

Mr Bristow was presented with a final cheque for $500 to add to the $5000 already raised as part of the State's 'Good Deed' program for the previous 2 years.

The assembled delegates then chose 'Youngcare', which is working toward providing facilities for ‘a dignified and relevant lifestyle for young people requiring nursing care', rather than having to live in aged care facilities, as their 'Good Deed' for the ensuing 2 years.

Tina Janssen and Peter Brooks, wildlife carers from 'Kial' in Marlborough whose particular focus is rescuing the endangered Bridled Nail Tail wallaby and the Hairy Nosed Wombat, were invited as the guest speakers.  CQU animal science students have previously worked closely with 'Kial' on studies involving blood grouping of macropods.  Their informative talk, plus the appearance of the very sociable Wiggles The Wombat, won over local Guild representatives who have pledged their financial support to the project.

Participants came from all over the state, from Townsville and Mackay to Toowoomba, Charleville, Longreach, Roma, Beaudesert and Caboolture.
