Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Darryl Somerville biography 

Darryl Somerville, BCom UQ is a Fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia (ICAA) and the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants (CPAs).  He is currently a Director of Careers Australia Group Ltd and Chairman of Sentinel Property Trust.

Following 10 years' employment with the Australian Taxation Office, including 8 years in senior positions in Canberra, Darryl joined PricewaterhouseCoopers in Brisbane in 1982, becoming a partner after 3½ years.  He then led the Taxation Practice in Brisbane and was appointed as the National Leader of the firm's Indirect Tax Practice, a position he held until the year 2000 when he stood down to work more closely with clients on the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

As National Director of the ICAA from 2000 - 2003, Darryl's clients included businesses ranging from privately-owned companies through to multi-nationals in the manufacturing, mining, energy and resources and retailing industries.

He was a member of the PricewaterhouseCoopers National Board of Partners (and its predecessor) for 7 years until mid 2004, before retiring in 2005 after 23 years of employment.

He has chaired several committees and panels, including the Queensland Government Review of Electricity Distribution and Service Delivery, which reported to Cabinet in July 2004 and the Energy Competition Committee, which oversaw the introduction of Full Retail Contestability in to Queensland.

In addition, Darryl was the Chairman of the judging panel for the Premier's Awards for Export Achievement for 9 years, until 2004.

In 2005, Darryl was appointed Chairman of the Brisbane Broncos Ltd, an ASX-listed company and also held a position on the Board of the publicly-listed company, Devine Limited, including 2 years as Chairman.

He has previously been a member of a number of charitable fundraising committees including the Juvenile Diabetes Walk Committee and the St John's Cathedral Completion Fund.
