Emergency Nursing Journal includes mental health context

The Australasian Emergency Nursing Journal will be assured of including 'mental health' contexts, thanks to the appointment of CQUniversity's Marc Broadbent as an Associate Editor.

Mr Broadbent, an academic and registered nurse based at CQUniversity Noosa, said his new role with the AENJ Editorial Council included encouragement for research into mental health care in emergency departments.

More generally, the role included contributing to the Journal's development, providing support to authors and peer reviewers and assisting with editorial policy and direction.

"There is very little research being conducted into mental health and the care of clients with mental illness in emergency departments," Mr Broadbent said.

"As part of a strategic review of the Journal it was determined that associate editor positions would be created in areas that reflect contempory issues in emergency nursing, including mental health.

"My related PhD research aims to understand the factors that influence the relationships between emergency department triage nurses and mental health nurses at the point of triage, or initial emergency assessment.

"It is an area I have been professionally interested in for a number of years, having been involved and in the area since 2001 and researching since 2005.

"So while my research is concerned with a very discreet area of practice in the Emergency Department, affecting the care of clients with a mental illness, I am interested in fostering research in all areas of mental health care, because it is an area of emergency care that has been sadly neglected ."
