Forum focuses on Indigenous cancer research

CQU's International Program for Psycho-Social Health Research (IPP-SHR) and the Queensland Cancer Fund have jointly hosted a forum in Brisbane to focus attention on cancer control issues within Indigenous populations.
The international guest speaker for the evening is Dr Judith Salmon Kaur, a Choctaw/Cherokee who is one of only 2 American Indian medical oncologists in her country.
The research meeting and lecture will enable Australian health professionals to discuss with Dr Kaur areas of mutual interest in relation to cancer research with Indigenous peoples.
Dr Kaur is the Medical Director of Native American Programs at the Mayo Clinic, USA, and brings a wealth of experience in Indigenous cancer control and a commitment to community-based participatory research.
Her public lecture will be on her work with the Spirit of Eagles American Indian/Alaska Native Program.
"The similarities between the American native and Australian Indigenous experience make the connection quite special," said IPP-SHR researcher Dr Pam McGrath.
"We are so privileged to have such a leader in this field share her insights with us," said Dr McGrath.
This event coincides with the launch of IPP-SHR’s new publication, 'The Living Model: A Resource Manual for Indigenous Palliative Care Service Delivery'.
