Mining rehabilitation on agenda in Rocky

Professionals and researchers involved in mining rehabilitation and environmental management will converge for a series of workshops at CQUniversity Rockhampton, from noon on Thursday March 25.

This Central Queensland Mining Rehabilitation Group (CQMRG) event has the theme of Mine Planning (towards Closure) and will encompass water issues, community development, erosion modelling, biodiversity and the use of cattle as a tool for mine site rehabilitation.

The group will engage with environmental and rehabilitation specialists and consultants from a range of research, government, education and mining sectors, including nickel, coal and limestone.

They will also take part in a site tour to the Mt Etna Limestone Mine on the Friday March 26.

Hosts for the event include Professor John Rolfe and Associate Professor Larelle Fabbro from the University's Centre for Environmental Management.

"The extent and scale of mining developments in Central Queensland are offering new challenges for industry to manage the environmental and social impacts in ways that minimise regional impacts and maintain community support for the industry," Professor Rolfe said.

Students interested in science and environment are welcome to attend.
