Central Queensland University lecturer Jenny Simpson was awarded with a $10,000 Carrick award for an outstanding contribution to student learning, at a ceremony at Customs House in Brisbane last week.
Jenny was specifically commended for “creating an inspirational learning and teaching environment that instils marginalised learners with the self-confidence, skills and knowledge to embark on a university education”.
Jenny, who is a teacher of the Language and Learning writing course for the STEPS (Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies) program, was one of 210 Australian teachers to receive a Carrick Citation.
The Carrick Citations are granted to people who have made a significant contribution to the quality of student learning in a specific area of responsibility over a sustained period, whether they are academic staff, general staff, sessional staff or institutional associates.
“I\'m delighted ... It\'s a celebration of the STEPS program in its 20th anniversary year,” she said.
“Having taught every year from years 1 to 12 in the past at primary and secondary schools, it\'s been wonderful in recent years teaching adults who have been an inspiration for their courage. It can be frightening for them to consider taking on university studies.
“This award is the icing on the cake. Teaching has been a passion and I really do thank my students for I\'ve learnt so much from working with them over the years”. To date, Jenny has personally taught well over 1000 STEPS students.
