CQUniversity Rockhampton became a hub for more than 100 participants in Sunday's Bike4Life event.
All four of the cycling events (5km, 25km, 60km and 100km) started and finished at the Community Sports Centre on campus, while riders of all ages (including disabled riders on tandem bikes and hand cycles) travelled along a 5km circuit within the University grounds.
Vice-Chancellor Profesor Scott Bowman welcomed the community to the campus and encouraged people to make use of the excellent sporting facilities in future. State Minister and local MP Robert Schwaten promoted safe bikeways and active transport during his speech to participants.
Riders weren't put off by the warm winter weather. Thirty-two cyclists completed the longest ride to Emu Park and Yeppoon, 45 took on the Cawarral circuit and 23 rode around North Rockhampton.
A total of $2000 was raised in support of the Amy Gillett Foundation, which promotes a shared respect between motorists and cyclists, and the Sporting Wheelies, who promote cycling to those with a disability.
Associate Professor Peter Reaburn helped organise the event and described it as a fun way for riders of all abilities and levels to have fun on their bikes while raising awareness of the values of the Amy Gillett Foundation.
The event was supported and jointly organised by CQUniversity, Rockhampton Regional Council, Main Roads and the Transport Department, Sporting Wheelies, Capricornia Bicycle Users Group and the Rockhampton Cycling Club. It's expected to beome a regular feature on the Rockhampton events calendar.
