Lakes Creek primary students audit council

Lakes Creek Primary School students, in partnership with Central Queensland University, performed an Energy Audit on Rockhampton City Council last Friday at the Town Hall.

Supported by CQU’s Faculty of Education and Creative Arts, the Lakes Creek students demonstrated what they had learned during an Energy Efficiency in Schools program undertaken at North Keppel Island Environmental Education Centre.

“CQU’s partnership with the Lakes Creek Primary School is providing wonderful learning opportunities for our young people. The support these young achievers have received from the Council and businesses in the community has been extraordinary,” said Associate Professor Ken Purnell, Head of the CQU School of Education & Innovation.

Two students met with Council members Neil Fisher (Committee Chairman), Craig Dunglison (Green Team representative) and Bronwyn Thorogood. Lakes Creek State School Principal Peter Black accompanied them.

Students are expected to conduct additional Energy Audits on up to six businesses in Rockhampton in an effort to reduce their emissions by 28% and energy use by as much as 10%.

Businesses participating in the audits may be eligible to receive an award from the Environmental Protection Agency for achieving the greatest energy savings.

Eleven representatives from the Lakes Creek student council presented an action plan to the Council’s Environmental Services Committee and ‘Green Team’ earlier this year.
