Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Shelley Nowlan BIO 

Shelley Nowlan, BNrs, MHlthMgt UNE, RN is the Director of Nursing/Facility Manager for the Sunshine Coast - Wide Bay Health Service District at the Sunshine Coast Caloundra Health Service.  This service is an accredited public healthcare facility participating in medical intern training and is affiliated with CQUniversity for nursing education.  It specialises in Rehabilitation, Orthapaedics, Opthalmology, Emergency and Surgical Services as well as maintaining a variety of other services, including a Chest Clinic, a Pacemaker Clinic, a Specialist Outpatient Clinic, Oral Health, Medical Imaging, a Renal Department, and a Diabetic Support Service.

Shelley is responsible for the effective leadership and management of the Services, including corporate and clinical governance.  She is the Chair of the Resource Management Committee, the Quality and Training Committee and the Risk Management Committee and is a member of the District Emergency Response, Clinical Governance, Patient Safety and Patient Flow Committees.

She has held several positions in the health profession, including that of Nursing Service Director at the Nambour General Hospital, has been published in several medical journals and has undertaken numerous continuing education programs.  She has been invited to be a Guest Lecturer at several Universities including CQUniversity.

In 2007, Shelley received a Premier's Award for her involvement with the Cyclone Larry relief efforts.  She is also the recipient of a Rotarian Scholarship to participate in a group study exchange to North and South America.

Shelley is a member of the District Executive Management Committee, the Vice-President of Association Queensland Nurse Leaders (AQNL), a fellow of the Royal College of Nursing Australia, a member of the Queensland Nurses Union, the Australian Institute Management, and the Sunshine Coast Business Womens Network and is an Alumni Rotarian at the Caloundra Rotary Club.
